4K, UHD, SUHD, Super UHD and OLED

With the constant upheaval in the field of technology and noticeable advancements in the industry; our perspective senses have gained so much. We are made habitual to the big screen experiences and have witnessed the evolution brought in the viewing industry by the latest mediums. Televisions, computers and other viewing gadgets are being designed in a way that not only gives us a clearer picture but a better and brighter version. The impressive shift from SD to HD was a delight for an eye and the increase in crispier image quality from 720p to 1080p was another milestone achievement. Another upgrade from DVD to Blu-ray changed the way we used to experience visuals before. We are usually bombarded with terms like 4K, UHD, SUHD, Super UHD, OLED, and HDR.

Do you know about resolutions? No?
Don’t worry, we have it sorted right here. Resolutions are measured by the number of lines of pixels in the image. The equation has 2 numbers, the first number denotes the no. of horizontal lines of pixels and the second one denotes the number of vertical lines. Thus, the image will get sharper as the resolution number will increase. Here are the examples of two standard resolution sizes-
  • 720p –  1280×720 vertical lines
  • 1080p – 1920×1080 vertical lines
In that scenario, 4K must be 4000+ vertical lines. Right?
Unfortunately, that’s not the case.
4K resolution is named keeping in mind the other side of the resolution i.e the horizontal resolution. To state the fact, most of the 4K displays are 3820×2160 in size also known as UHD-1. A special kind of 4K display is measured at 7680×4320 and is popularly known as UHD- 2.  4K displays are a gift to technology and ensures that you have larger than life experiences.

DCI 4K is yet another resolution that is used in the film and entertainment industry to produce high-resolution content. Professionally termed as DCI 4K; the values go by 4096 x 2160 and is a great addition to the 4K family.

UHD
The term UHD was used to describe 4K TVs from the year 2014 till present. The resolution of UHD TVs are marked as 3840×2160 and are generally denoted as 4K.  You might have come across with the term UHD while shopping for TV sets. Samsung generally calls its standard 4K display as “UHD TV”. While LG, Sony, Vizio, and other brands denote their standard 4K displays as “4K Ultra HD TV”  
Super UHD/SUHD
Samsung was the first company which started using the term SUHD at CES in 2015. With the introduction of  SUHD, various speculations were made as to what S means. There was a wave of various adjectives as to what S stands for and some speculated that it denotes “Samsung” while some summed it to be “Super”, “Spectacular” and even “Stupendous”. With a motive to stand out and mark a difference in the market, Samsung stepped up and named their 4K display sets as SUHD. These displays are magnificent and provide a rich visual experience because of Samsung’s high-tech Quantum Dot Display that exhibits a vibrant display experience. the resolution of 3840×2160 is basic in various TV sets like SUHD, Super UHD TV, 4K HDR TVs, and Ultra HD HDR TV.
In order to stand tall in the market and beat others in this competitive edge; like others, LG also stretched out in the marketplace and dubbed its non-OLED 4K displays and named them as “Super UHD”.  UHD means – Ultra High Definition and helps in designating displays that are equipped with enhanced color technology. After UHD and SUHD, High Dynamic Range commonly known as HDR came to being and rolled out with supreme efficiency. Each company equipped the above listed in their products and named them variably. Samsung used “SUDH” for their high-end 4K displays. LG is more popular as “Super UHD” while Sony named their 4K display units as “4K HDR” and lastly, Vizio is known as “Ultra HD HDR”.
What is OLED?  
These days the most common display present in TV sets whether 4K, UHD or SUHD  is equipped with LCD screens. LCD screens are incredibly thin and easily mounted on the wall and exhibit a bright display. The liquid crystals get illuminated by a very strong LED backlight and deliver the picture in excellent viewing quality.
The most recent types are OLED TVs. This type of TVs are much different and is known for a better and more precise illuminated experience. OLED stands for “organic light emitting diode” and each of the organic pixel is capable of illuminating itself. This type of screen doesn’t need a backlight and much better color experience. They are the latest hit in the market and getting popular due to fairly placed features and accessibility.
Easing out the dilemma-
Despite the fact of the endless feature list and a lot of buzz running down in the marketplace on 4K don’t get all decked up and confused with it. 4K/Ultra High Definition (UHD) offers excellent picture quality and vibrant colors.
